The TLS Archive at News International Record Office

The surviving archive of The Times Literary Supplement is housed at the News International Record Office. It consists of the following principal classes of records:

Stock Books

As described in ‘Sources and Methods’, these represent the working lists of material available to the Editor of the TLS for each issue of the paper. They include the reviews, articles and letters available for publication each week together with a note of their length. The items used in a particular issue were scored through and the remaining unused material went forward for consideration the next week. The Stock Books survive from 1909 onward but any meaningful information on the names of contributors is only included from 1914.

Contributors Department Marked Copies

These consist of a back-file of the published paper annotated in manuscript with information indicating the authorship of individual reviews and articles. Details of payments made are included from 15 April 1909. The records survive from 1902, though there are some gaps in the sequence notably the years 1955, 1957, 1967, 1970-1973 which are missing.

Editors’ documents/correspondence and editorial copy

Although some material has survived from 1902 onwards it is very fragmented and it is not until the 1960’s that any meaningful quantity of documents and correspondence has survived. Please note however that this material is subject to a 30-year closure rule.

The Times Editorial Leader Diaries

These relate specifically to The Times and date from 1857 but from 1902 they include details of the author and title of the main articles and reviews in the TLS.
